I wholeheartedly agree, but here is the corollary question: Why would Cincy be willing to take damaged goods in the body of Springs?

They need a Vet CB pretty badly with Jon Joseph, Ratliff and Deltha O'Neal(who is expected to be cut).

Badly is the right word there if they will take Springs.

Well Springs is part of the trade. We could probably use a June 1st waiver on him and gain about $4 mil in cap. And then cut Wynn and gain another $4 mil. At that point, we're looking at about $16 mil in cap space (last I heard we had about $8). These are numbers off the top of my head, so I may (and probably am) wrong. So our line would be Carter/Griffin/Branch/Anderson with depth of Evans and Daniels at DE and Golston, Salave'a and Monty at DT. I could see Golston coming in to keep Griffin and Branch fresh too.

The bet I made with cutter over whether or not JC will become our franchise QB. If anybody knows where Cutter is, I clearly owe him a steak dinner.

as for the cb depth chart, i'd actually be comfortable with Smoot and Rogers as our starters, though i think i'm probably in the minority on that one. with the new defensive line, we'd be able to leave safeties in coverage and linebackers a step further off the line to help out in coverage anyway.
I can see that, Springs is a solid corner (when healthy). And a second rounder plus another second rounder (slight mortgaging of the future, but if a guy like Branch falls, I think it's smart) the next year. Solid trade but I really doubt Branch falls that far. I think we should stay put and grab Tank Tyler or Ben Grubbs or Justin Blaylock.

there have been mocks of late that have him falling completely out of the first round. his stock has dropped amazingly for a guy that's done nothing but the right things since the national championship ended.

this would be an awesome draft for the skins and i agree the skins should deal back into the first and get branch if hes available that late or maybe even justin harrell

this is kind of my point.. i do not think the same level of performance at corner (wright/rogers) would be acceptable this year.. fall off is out of the question

but it is all driven by rumor and innuendo.. not guarantee he will drop that severely when the draft actually happens..

if it does, somebody is going to get a trmendous value with their pick of branch.. i would love to see it be the redskins if he drops to the middle or latter portion of the first round

i don't think that's expected at all. even if Springs is gone due to injury or roster move, smoot and macklin are upgrades to Wright.

yes, but with all the questions surrounding him now, specifically the stress fracture nonsense, it's not out of the question that he'll plummet to a place that it's reasonable for us to reach back out to get him.

i see it the same way.

dont forget that with smoot and springs williams had a fine defense his first year.

i was just musing that having terrible corner play cannot be an acceptable option this year to come.. the upgrade in the d line (if it happens) will off it's own accord make the def secondary look better.. but there has to be an improvement over last year.

if spring is there 60-75 % of the time, i think it will be enough

i sure hope it happens that way.

still, we are not necessarily getting a true reading on how nlf personnel men actually feel about branch

Good stuff, Fent.

Nice call on the Skins using one of their first day picks in '08 to get address the other d-line position. They have been doing this practice for years, so why stop now?

If we ended up with TWO first round d-linemen (Especially any combination of the top four) I'd be ecstatic!

yeah...that was my thinking in doing that rather than give up another player. we don't trade players very often, but we really like to trade next year's picks.
